Pizza Party

Every city has a quintessential pizzeria, and Pala Pizza Romana is Bangkok’s version of this staple. Conveniently located between the MRT and BTS stations at Asoke, it is a popular spot to get a quick bite on the way to work or play for the thousands of commuters that pass by every day. They are a full-service restaurant and deli offering over 40 different kinds of meat and cheeses, salads as well as olive oils, jams, honey, purees and desserts. They are famous for their signature square pizza, fresh ingredients and unique Roman style crust which is firm and crispy while being light and airy. You can’t go wrong with any pizza on the menu and the Margherita, Boscaiola, 5 Formaggi, and Toscana are some of their most popular options. Buy it by the slice or pick up a whole pie; either way, you won’t be disappointed with their scrumptious pizza.

Go Local

The Local by Oamthong Thai Cuisine is the kind of idyllic Thai restaurant that one imagines when conjuring up “the perfect” stereotype for a beloved family-owned Thai eatery. Located in a beautifully restored old house, this place has an almost living museum vibe and they even boast a silk shop boutique on site which produces a top quality selection of the finest Thai silk products, souvenirs, and home décor accessories. The entire menu here is amazing, and their Four Hour Braised Southern Style Stewed Pork with Duck & Quail Eggs along with the Beef in Thai Herbs & Shrimp Paste Curry is stunningly brilliant. The braised pork and egg stew are one of the best versions you will ever try, and the super spicy beef in fermented shrimp paste is a fiery delight that keeps you coming back for more. Wash it all down with Dragon Mojito made with dragon fruit, pineapple, mint and rum or a Tom Yum Martini with vodka, triple sec, kaffir lime, lemongrass, galangal and chilies for a truly unforgettable meal.

Taco Time

There is a slew of options for Mexican fare in Bangkok, but Slanted Taco is setting themselves apart from the crowd. While the playful “double entendre” associated with their name is not lost on most, it’s their fresh and unique take on “Mexican street food with a South Beach vibe” that is noteworthy. Their meats are all smoked and marinated in-house before being skillfully grilled, and their yummy homemade guacamole has no added fillers. You must try their Maya´s Mexico City Tacos, which are soft, homemade corn tortillas with your choice of filling and a trio of Mexican sauces. The homemade chorizo and carnitas are particularly remarkable as the pork is well seasoned, smoky, fatty, and rich. It is cooked so that there are delightful caramelized bits throughout, and the chorizo is spicy and flavorsome with a crumbly texture. For beer be sure to order the Mexicali or the Day of the Dead, which is a bespoke craft beer.

Get Fruity

Asoke may not have an abundance of street food, but you don’t have to look too far to be able to find a vendor selling fresh fruit, pressed fruit juices and even the iconic Mango & Sticky Rice, that is beloved by just about everyone who tries. Fruit carts usually offer sweet pineapple, juicy watermelon, guava and green mango cut to order and served up in a plastic bag with a wooden stick for easy access. While sugar cane juice and orange juice are usually easy to find it’s the ruby red pomegranate juice that is the real food find. It’s perfectly sweet and slightly tart and far superior to anything you will find in a pre-packaged version. The best time to find the street vendors is in the evening and they tend to congregate around the BTS & MRT station.

Steak Out

El Gaucho is a wildly popular steakhouse that is neither stuffy nor pretentious. Boasting a well-trained English speaking staff, they distinguish themselves by offering great steaks and highlighting the flavors of Argentina and South America. They have a comprehensive wine list with nearly 100 varieties available by the bottle and by the glass. Go for the steak and try the Filet of Australian Black Angus Prime or the Ribeye of USDA Black Angus Prime. Both steaks are served on a sizzling plate and are perfectly cooked to a “titillating” medium rare. You can see the crisscross charcoal marks on the meat and the aroma is intoxicating. Be sure to end your meal with a traditional ‘El Caramel’ which is a seductive shot of vodka and caramel which is satisfyingly sinful.
